New Britain, CT- The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, was awarded the top vegetarian ballpark in the minor leagues by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Fans attending a Rock Cats game can select from a variety of vegetarian meals, salads and fruits. The minor league ballpark rankings are listed on the website PETA.org.
New Britain Stadium has come in at number one in its debut appearance on PETA's newest list of the Top Five Vegetarian-Friendly Minor League Ballparks. Delicious meat-free concession favorites include veggie dogs and burgers, vegetable crudités, made-to-order veggie wraps, and several tasty fruit treats.
"New Britain Stadium helped put delicious plant-free fare on the map this year," says Kenneth Montville, PETA's senior campaign strategist. "It's easier than ever to choose healthy animal-free options while cheering on teams across the country- and PETA is calling on others to get in on the rising trend now."
The Tulsa Drillers' ONEOK Field came in second place, followed by the Biloxi Shuckers' MGM Park in third. Rounding out the top five is the Pensacola Blue Wahoos' Pensacola Bayfront Stadium at number four, and the Erie SeaWolves' Jerry Uht Park at number five. Top honors in the majors went to Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"We feel it is important to have a variety of food items for our fans and we are delighted that PETA selected us the top vegetarian ballpark in the minors," said Rock Cats General Manager Tim Restall. "Our veggie burgers, veggie hot dogs, veggie wraps and salads are some of the most popular concession foods ordered at a Rock Cats game."Â
The demand for vegetarian food is growing, according to research groups and leading food distributors. Virtually everyone has a vegetarian friend or family member, and when choosing entertainment, people want to know that all their friends and family can enjoy the food.
The Rock Cats return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday night, August 11th (7:05 PM) and kick off a 6-game homestand against the Yankees' (Trenton Thunder) and Mets' (Binghamton Mets) affiliates.
