TONIGHT'S GAME 1: The Red Wings open their best-of-five first round Governors' Cup playoff series tonight against the IL North champion Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston) at 7:05 p.m. at Frontier Field... The Wings will play Games 1 and 2 (THUR, 7:05 pm) at home before the series shifts to McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI for Games 3-5 Friday thru Sunday... Tonight's game will be the 10th playoff game in the 17-year history of Frontier Field and the first since 9/13/06 (6-1 win over TOL)... The Wings are 7-2 in playoff games all-time at Frontier Field ... Wednesday's game will be the Wings 305th all-time Governors' Cup playoff game and Rochester's 381st all-time postseason game... The Red Wings clinched the Wild Card with a 13-3 win over SWB on Monday.

RED WINGS IN THE GOVERNORS' CUP PLAYOFFS:

- This will be the Wings 44th appearance in the Governors' Cup playoffs -- first since 2006 (WC) & just 2nd appearance since 1997

-The Wings have gone 149-155 in 304 all-time Governors' Cup playoff games -- winning 29 series while losing 33 series.

-The Wings have won 19 first round series -- including four of their last five (two vs PAW, '96 & '97)... ROC has lost 11 Cup finals.

-The Wings own an IL record 10 Governors' Cup titles - but are in a franchise-long, 15-year title drought (Last Cup win was '97).

-The Red Wings have faced Pawtucket in the Governors' Cup playoffs 3 times (all first round series)... Rochester has won all 3 series over the Paw Sox (3-1) in 1986, 1996 and 1997.

GAME 1 PROBABLES...:

-DE VRIES : Making his 6th career playoff appearance (5th start) and first since 2009 with New Britain (3.0 ip, 0 r)... Is 2-1, 3.67 ERA (11 ER/27.0 IP) in his 5 career playoff games with Beloit ('07), Ft. Myers ('09) & New Britain ('10) ... Coming off his best start of the season on 8/29 @ BUF (N/D; 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K)... Over his last 5 GS (at 4 different levels; GCL, A+, AA & AAA) since returning from a right elbow strain, has gone 1-1, 0.35 ERA (ER/26.0 IP) allowing just 2 R, 12 H, BB & 19 K... On Wings DL 7/6-8/8.

-RANAUDO : Making his first career postseason appearance... Was a 1st round pick (39th overall) of the Red Sox out of LSU in 2010... Went 11-5, 2.96 ERA (46 ER/140.0 IP) in 25 G (24 GS) between Portland (8-4, 2.95 ERA) & Pawtucket in 2013... At Double-A, opponents hit just .204 off him as he struck out 106 in 109.2 innings... Made 4 GS vs NBR this season going 2-0, 1.48 ERA (4 ER/24.1 IP)... In his last GS with PAW on 8/25 vs SWB allowed 5 R on 8 H in 3.0 IP... In last app. tossed 4 hitless innings in relief vs SYR (8/30)

HOW THEY GOT HERE: After a 2-11 start and a 20-30 record on May 27, the Wings made the postseason by virtue of going 57-37 over the season's final 94 G . The Wings used a 20-8 month of July (first 20-win month since Aug.,'08 and first 20-win July since going 23-6 in 1997) to move from 11.0 GB in the IL North on 7/2 to a 1.0 game lead in the division at month's end... After a 6-G losing streak (8/20-8/26) knocked the Wings out of playoff position, Rochester rebounded to win 5 of their last 7 G -- including winning 3 straight to end the regular season for the first time 1995 ... The Wings entered the final day of the season needing a win and a Norfolk loss to clinch the Wild Card (Rochester won the season series tiebreaker over the Tides, 6-2). Durham took care of Norfolk (1-0 in 10 innings) while the Wings used a season-high, 9-run 1st inning and their first triple-play since 2006 to beat SWB, 13-3 .

-Pawtucket, after an 11-30 skid dropped them to 3rd place and 4.0 GB in the North on August 9, finished the season going 19-4 in their final 23 regular season games as they clinched their 3rd straight playoff berth for the first time in team history.

RED WINGS VS. PAW SOX: The Wings claimed the 2013 season series over Pawtucket, 9-7 -- their first season series win over the Paw Sox since 2009 (10-6)... Pawtucket began the year by sweeping the Wings in a 4-G set at McCoy Stadium (4/11-14) and winning 6 of the first 8 games between the two clubs. Rochester answered with their first 4-G sweep of Pawtucket since 1995 from 7/4-7/7 at Frontier Field and enter this playoff series winning 7 of their last 8 against the Paw Sox ... Pawtucket outscored the Wings, 72-65, in the season series however the Wings held Pawtucket to 2 or fewer runs in 5 of their last 8 meetings. The Wings hit .232 with 11 HR & 16 SB vs PAW, while the pitching staff posted a 4.71 ERA and were 2-for-4 in SV chances vs the Paw Sox.

RED WINGS IN THE TRIPLE-A POSTSEASON: Only 4 players on the Red Wings current roster have Triple-A playoff experience .

-Virgil Vasquez: Made one appearance for Toledo in 2006 vs the Red Wings at Frontier Field (1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, SO)

-P.J. Walters: Has made 4 Triple-A postseason starts all with Memphis (St. Louis) -- including the start in the 2009 National Championship Game vs DUR (N/D; 4.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R/ER, 3 SO)... Overall is 1-0, 5.31 ERA (12 ER/20.1 IP) in 4 GS from 2009-10.

-Ray Olmedo: Has appeared in 11 Triple-A postseason games all with Durham in 2009 & 2011... Hit .289 (11-38) w/ 3B, 2 2B, 5 R, RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO... Went 2-for-3; 2 2B, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB in 2009 Triple-A National Championship Game vs Memphis.

-Jermaine Mitchell: Has appeared in 13 Triple-A postseason games with Sacramento (A's) from 2011-12... Hit .218 (12-55) with a HR, 3B, 2B, 10 R, RBI, 5 BB, 16 SO & SB... Lost in the Governors' Cup Finals in 2011 to Omaha (3-0).

COMING IN HOT: INF Eduardo Escobar is 13-34 (.382) with 3 HR, 5 2B, 6 R & 9 RBI over his current season-high 9-G hit streak... INF Ray Olmedo is 7-13 (.538) with a 2B & 4 RBI over his last 3 G after going 7-56 (.125) w/ no XBH & 4 RBI over his previous 19 G...OF Jermaine Mitchell has a hit in 10 of last 13 starts batting .350 (21-60) with a 2B, 3B, HR, 6 R & 5 RBI since 8/6...OF Aaron Hicks is 7-for-18 (.389) with 5 XBH (3 2B & 2 3B) in the last 5 G...INF James Beresford has hit .317 (20-63) with 4 2B, 9 R & 9 RBI in last 16 G.
