Rochester RazorSharks at Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry Game Preview

March 17, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release

This is the last of four meetings between the two 2010 Premier Basketball League finalists. The defending champion Cavarly won two of the previous three, one of those in overtime.

The RazorSharks (10-7) look increasingly like a playoff team after a 2-6 start. They can brand themselves a championship threat with a win at Lawton.

Playing at home, Rochester lost to LFS in overtime 102-98 and then beat the Cavs on a buzzer beating halfcourt inbounds play 93-91, in what was the game of the year at the Blue Cross Arena and perhaps the entire PBL. The Sharks and Quebec Kebs are the only teams to beat Lawton this season.

After that slow start, Rochester has won six straight and eight of its last nine games to move from fifth to third in the PBL playoff race. Four of those six wins came at home, but the RazorSharks played two good games on the road at Kentucky and Dayton winning by 14 and 30 points.

Guard Keith Friel scored 51 points in those two games and was the high scorer in each. He has 47 made three-pointers converting 46.5%. Both lead the PBL. Friel didn't play in Rochester's last visit to Lawton, a 99-86 defeat.

The Cavalry (14-2) have a chance to re-establish themselves as a clear cut favorite to repeat as PBL champs over the next two games, while avenging their only two defeats. LFS hosts Rochester Friday and Quebec Sunday. A win Sunday regardless of the outcome of the RazorShark game will nail down the regular season championship.

The Cavs have won two straight since losing at Rochester and their six games prior to that defeat. Returning home, LFS beat Halifax by 26 and Dayton by 19.

Except for Elvin Mims who leads the PBL in blocked shots and ranks third in steals, LFS has few players among the league leaders. Still the Cavs lead the league as a team in the four major offensive and defensive catagories. They have seven players averaging between 10 and 15 ppg.

Of note: The game brings together the two top scoring teams in the PBL. Lawton averages 108.0 points per game. Rochester scores 106.1 Over their six game win streak, the RazorSharks are averaging 115.7 ppg.

Of note: This game brings together the league's top two shot blockers. Elvin Mims of the Cavalry has 29 in 16 games. Rochester's Jared Carter has 29 in 17 games.

Of note: Halifax (8-8) lost at home to Saint John ( 8-7) 104-98 on Thursday. The Rainmen are currently the odd team out in the playoff race. They play the Mill Rats the last two games of the regular season.
