The Santa Fe Roadrunners (4-4-0) opened the 2005 North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, MN in big fashion this afternoon as they crushed the Helena Bighorns by a score of 6-0. For the second straight game, credit the sparkling goaltending of veteran goaltender Chris Carlson as he posted his second consecutive shutout by stopping all 29 shots. With the win, the Roadrunners have climbed back to .500 after a tough 1-4 start.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a first period 2-0 lead on goals by defensemen Rafael Rodriguez and Brandon Johnson. In the second period, Roadrunners forwards took over the game out shooting the opponents 17-14 and registered goals from Brett Coley, Anthony Bohn and Cory Stark. Alex Arnason rounded out the scoring in the third period.

The Santa Fe powerplay went 2 for 6 on goals scored by Johnson and Stark. The penalty kill was perfect as the Roadrunners held the Bighorn offense to little pressure and killed off all 6 attempts. In total, 13 different players registered at least one point in the contest with Rodriguez, Johnson and Arnason leading the way with a goal and assist each.

Game two is set tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 Central as the Roadrunners face the Bismarck Bobcats (3-4-1). The Bobcats dropped a 4-3 decision today to the Texas Tornado by way of a shootout. Visit NAHL.com to hear the game live or follow the game in real time by Pointstreak.
