Traverse City North Stars News Release
BLAINE, Mn. - For the first time in four games, 60 minutes was enough to decide the outcome of the Traverse City North Stars' game. And for the third time in a row, that outcome wasn't to the team's liking.
After three straight games decided in overtime or a shootout session, Traverse City fell 6-1 in regulation time on Thursday against Bozeman in the North American Hockey League Showcase lid-lifter at Schwans Super Rink in Blaine, Mn. The IceDogs netted three shorthanded goals and did not convert on any of the 10 power play chances afforded.
"Special teams killed us tonight," Stars head coach/GM Scott Gardiner said. "And you don't give up three shorthanded goals without a lot of mental mistakes - and it was our best guys out there making them.
"You can say that we're a new team and we're going up against teams with 10 or more guys in their locker room that have been though these kinds of games with scouts in the stands, but that's just an excuse, and we don't make excuses."
The North Stars outshot the IceDogs by a 36-33 margin for the contest, but experienced difficulty making those shots count.
"In 5-on-5 hockey, I thought we either skated right with them or outplayed them," Gardiner assessed. "But we couldn't get that break, that bounce."
Chris McKelvie got the IceDogs on the board first, breaking the scoreless deadlock at 13:34 of the opening period, and assisted on Kyle Bailey's even-strength tally four minutes later. Bailey (8:49) and Matt Hughes (1:07) each registered shorthanded scores in the second period.
Mike Schumacher gave Bozeman (6-3-0) a 5-0 edge at 4:57 of the final stanza.
Steve Hackman (Howell, MI/Metro Jets CSHL) got Traverse City on the board with 8:39 to play on assists from Travis Paeth (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Mona Shores H.S.) and captain Jarrett Rush (Pennington, NJ/Cobourg OPJHL). It was Hackman's first goal of the 2005-06 campaign, and helped the team avoid its first-ever shutout.
Bozeman capped the scoring with 1:27 to go - on its third shorthanded goal of the contest - as Luke Bennett intercepted a pass deep in the Stars zone and finished the unassisted play.
Jeremy Kaleniecki (Addison Twp., MI/Robert Morris College) made 27 stops in net for TC, while Mike Jarboe kept the Stars offense under wraps with 35 saves NAHL Showcase action continues on Thursday, as the Stars (4-4-2) square off with Billings at 8 p.m. EST at the multi-sheet facility in the Minneapolis suburb of Blaine. All 20 NAHL clubs are taking part in the annual event, the largest such hockey smorgasbord in the league's 30-year history.
Wasilla (Ak.) is Friday's opponent for Traverse City, as the North Stars and Spirit drop the puck at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, TC takes on Fairbanks in a 1 p.m. affair.
