Chico Outlaws News Release

St. George Roadrunners won their first ever series with the Chico Outlaws two games to one after topping the Outlaws in Chico 6-4. St. George starter Shannon Sprouse settled down after allowing four runs in the 2nd inning, shutting the Outlaws down over the next 5 innings for the win.

It looked like the game was going to be a high-scoring affair through the first three innings, but Sprouse and Chico reliever John Jefferson silenced the opposition for most of the game.

Jefferson set an Outlaws record for the longest relief outing, pitching 5.2 innings. Ironically, the previous holder of that record was Chico starter Jake McKinley, who lasted just 2.1 innings while losing his first game of the season - he falls to 1-1.

Jefferson gave up a run in the 8th inning, but was masterful for most of the game, getting out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the 3rd after replacing McKinley.

Matt Pena pitched the 9th for his second save in two days for the Roadrunners as the Outlaws couldn't reach base against him. .

Outlaws outfielder Steve Boggs went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at six games. Jason Matteucci started the game at center field and went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI and catcher Ricky Bambino chipped in two hits as well in a losing effort.

The Roadrunners once again topped the 10-hit plateau with 12 hits in the game. Geoff Wagner and Matt Rivkin both crushed home runs off McKinley and Steven Wright reached base twice after being hit by pitches. For the Outlaws, third baseman Jesse Oster was plunked for the third time in two games.

Before the game, the Roadrunners signed former Chico State standout pitcher Ben Buker. Buker didn't see any action, but will make the trip to Reno with the Roadrunners.
