
Roadrunners Steal One from 'Wings

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 7-6 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Trailing 6-5, Edinburg got some help from the WhiteWings' defense in the bottom of the ninth. A dropped fly ball allowed the tying and winning run to score for the victory.
With the win, the Roadrunners (38-37) move into second place in the United League standings.
Dan Coury gave the Roadrunners the early lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Travis Clark reached after being hit by a pitch and later came into score on Coury's RBI hit making it 1-0.
The WhiteWings (34-41) took the lead in the top of the fourth against Edinburg's starter Antony Bello. With a couple of runners on, Chad Bunting hit a two-run double that drove in Hector Garcia and Scott Lacey giving RGV the 2-1 edge.
Jordan Etier and Michael Haynes reached to start the bottom of the fifth inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Agustin Septimo, Tim Maitland drove in Etier and Haynes with a two-run double giving the Roadrunners the 3-2 lead.
Edinburg added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth after Tim Battle drove in Derrick Pyles with an RBI fielder's choice making it 4-2.
RGV answered with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Roberto Ramirez hit a two-run double and then Thomas Schull followed with a two-run single giving the 'Wings the 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Roadrunners cut the lead down to one after a sacrifice fly by Battle that allowed Trevor Whyte to score making it 6-5 in favor of the WhiteWings.
The Roadrunners answered in the bottom of the ninth against RGV closer Nelson Curry (3-3). Agustin Septimo reached on a single and then moved to second after a fielding error. One out later, Whyte was walked to load the bases. A fielding error in the outfield allowed Septimo and Maitland to score giving Edinburg the 7-6 victory.
Cullen Babin (6-1) picked up the win after pitching three innings and allowing just one run on three hits with four strike outs.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will wrap up their four-game series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will be Univision Radio Family Night where six general tickets will be $10 when a coupon is presented at the box office.
