Roadrunners Lose to Thunder

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- Heading to the ninth with a one run lead, the Edinburg Roadrunners' bullpen gave up three runs to the Coastal Bend and were unable to produce any offense in the bottom of the inning to give the Thunder the 6-4 victory Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Coastal Bend started all scoring in the top of the second inning when Amadeo Zazueta hit an RBI single to left field that allowed Manny Mejia to score for a 1-0 lead.

Zazueta then hit another RBI single in the top of the fourth that scored Chris Lewis to extend the Thunder lead 2-0.

In the fourth inning the Roadrunners took the lead with four runs on five hits starting with a walk to Robert Matlock who then moved to second on a Carlos Hereaud single. Hunter Owen then hit an RBI single to center field that allowed Matlock to score from second base for the first run of the inning. Bryon Smith followed with an RBI single to right field that drove in Hereaud and Vincent Blue continued the inning with an RBI double that allowed Owen to score from third. Eric Gonzalez then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Smith to touch home plate for a 4-2 score.

An error in the top of the eighth inning by the Roadrunners allowed Dustin Smith to reach and w wild pitch by Miguel Martinez allowed Smith to move to second. Smith then stole third and scored after the second error of the inning making it a 4-3 game.

Bryan Vickers led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run, his fourth, which tied things at four. Two singles, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk after the home run, Manny Mejia hit a two run single that drove in Michael Lewis and Smith which gave the Thunder a 6-4 lead.

Benny Cepeda worked a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.

The Roadrunners will open a four-game series on the road against the San Angelo Colts starting on Friday night at Foster Field. Danny Rondon is expected to pitch in the opening game of the series with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
