RiverRats vs. Harrisburg Game Preview
May 21, 2009 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Erie Explosion News Release
ERIE, PA - (5/21/09) On Saturday night, the Erie RiverRats will meet the Harrisburg Stampede at the Louis J. Tullio Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania. The game is a rematch of the game the Stampede won on a controversial call on the last play of the game on April 18. Harrisburg (3-6) comes into the game with hopes of a playoff berth dwindling after a 44-6 loss to the Reading express last week. The RiverRats (1-7) are just looking to get on a winning streak after a stunning victory over the Baltimore Mariners on a 45-yard field goal by newly acquired kicker, Joe Lindway, as time expired last week.
Harrisburg comes into the game with many questions to be answered. Three weeks ago Kelly Logan was fired as the head coach of the Stampede and replaced by assistant coach Mike McDonald. The Stampede then picked up quarterback Ramon Robinson, who had recently been released as the head coach of the Carolina Speed. After two less than stellar performances, the Stampede picked up quarterback Billy Ashburn in a trade with the Columbus Lions, with Robinson now calling the offensive plays for Harrisburg. After a dismal performance in the rout against Reading, the Stampede have released Ashburn and now will likely turn to A.J. Roque, who led the Stampede over the RiverRats in their first matchup.
The RiverRats have steadily gotten better behind the leadership of converted quarterback Darmel Whitfield. Head Coach Steven G. Folmar has seen a positive progression in all of Whitfield's game so far, "Darmel's first game at quarterback was against the Stampede. He has had time to get comfortable with his receivers and the offense and we think the results will be different in this contest." This week will also see the return of receiver Chris "Crazy Legs" Kolokithas, who sat out the Baltimore game with a deep knee contusion. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm.
The AIFA is in its third season of operations this year with 14 teams from coast to coast and two additional franchises (Richmond, VA and Trenton, NJ) scheduled for the 2010 season.
