RiverRats Sign Stand-Out Quarterback Kevin Mason

May 28, 2009 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) - Erie Explosion News Release

ERIE, PA - The Erie RiverRats have turned their season around with two consecutive wins, but they are not resting with a crucial rematch coming up against the Harrisburg Stampede this coming Saturday Night. The Rats signed former NFL, CFL and Arena Football League quarterback Kevin Mason this week who expected to be under center in Harrisburg. Mason, who won the AIFL Championship in 2005 as the quarterback of the Canton Legends, was a standout quarterback at the University of Syracuse before playing with the Oakland Raiders of the NFL, Saskatchewan and Edmonton in the CFL, and the Buffalo Destroyers and the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL. "We want to make sure we continue to get better as the season progresses", said head coach Steven G. Folmar, "These guys have learned how to win, now by bringing in Kevin, we have a guy who has experience winning it all. His ability to play either quarterback or wide-receiver at a high level opens up a lot of options for us."

Mason, who retired after last season playing both receiver and quarterback for an under-manned Canton Legends team said he was originally luke-warm to the idea of coming back, but is now starting to get excited about playing again, "After working out hard on to get back into game shape, my body was resisting the idea of me playing again, but now as we get closer to kickoff I start thinking about it more and the fire is coming back." Outside of football, Kevin runs Breakthrough Sports Training in Lockport, New York, which is a program designed to give young athletes the skills to take their games to the next level. Gametime in Harrisburg is scheduled 7:05pm for Saturday Night, and you can catch all the action online at

The AIFA is in its third season of operations this year with 14 teams from coast to coast and two additional franchises (Richmond, VA and Trenton, NJ) scheduled for the 2010 season.
