Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, GA (May 28, 2009) - The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce the signing of wide receiver Anthony Merritt (5'11 195, North Alabama).
Merritt rejoins the Lions after spending majority of the 2008 season with club but was later signed by the AFL's Colorado Crush in early July to help with their playoff run. The former Shaw High School standout spent the early part of the 2009 season with the Tennessee Valley Vipers where he saw limited action due to injury.
During the 2008 season, Merritt led the team in all-purpose yards with 1428 and a combined 32 total touchdowns. Not only did the former Harlon Hill candidate lead the team in receiving, he also led the team in rushing with 7 rushing touchdowns and also pitched in with 5 passing touchdowns.
Anthony earned top nods as the AIFA's leading reception leader with 86 while finishing with 991 receiving yards while being named to the 2008 All-AIFA team. "Its great to have the playmaking abilities of an Anthony Merritt on your club," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Merritt makes the players around him better and I expect our strong receiving core to get even better with Anthony around."
Anthony will get his first taste of action with the Lions this Saturday night as they take on the defending AIFA champion Florence Phantoms at 7:30 pm at the Columbus Civic Center. Call 706-322-3DEN to find out how you can get in the JUNGLE!
