Erie Explosion News Release
ERIE, PA - (3/2/09) The Erie RiverRats closed out their first week of training camp with a controlled scrimmage Sunday night at the Family First Golf Dome in Erie, Pa. The scrimmage was open to the public and the fans were given quite a show as the Rats defense showed it will be a force to be reckoned with in the league while the offense, despite some early miscues, provided some fireworks as well.
Early on Raji El-Amin, a two time All-American from Rhode Island University, took a deep pass from Ray Marrow for the first touchdown of the evening. El-Amin then caught another Marrow pass, this time as a defensive back, returning the interception for a touchdown as well. The defense then harassed both Marrow and quarterback Markell Harrison before Harrison finally got things on track with both his arm and his feet. Harrison showed some of the moves he learned running the spread option at West Virginia University and took off on two long scampers out of the pocket before finding Jovon Johnson on a post pattern for a touchdown. The next couple drives ended when the defense buckled down in the redzone ending two promising offensive drives. Then in a pride period, where the offense gets four tries to put the ball in the endzone, the first series ended in disaster when Marrow was intercepted in the endzone. But the offense got back on track when Harrison found Eastern Michigan Alum Tremaine Riley on a crossing route in the endzone, while quarterback Marrow took a perfectly executed naked bootleg into the endzone untouched on the final drive of the night.
The RiverRats now begin a period of practices for five nights straight before their final preseason scrimmage before final cuts. Practices will be held at the Family First Golf Dome from 9:30pm to 11:30pm and the final scrimmage next Saturday night will be held at the same location beginning at 9:30pm. All practices and the scrimmage are open to the public.
The Erie RiverRats' season begins March 15th on the road in Baltimore. The team then returns for a home opener scheduled for March 28th at 7 p.m. at the Tullio Arena versus the DC Armor.
