(Southaven, MS) -- A shootout was needed, but using a shorthanded goal from Louis Dumont to tie the game and another goal from Dumont in the shootout, the Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Colorado Eagles 4-3 and claimed the team's eighth straight victory on Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Mississippi moved within three points of Colorado in the Northern Conference race for the number one seed in the playoffs and preserved a five-point lead over Bossier-Shreveport in the run for the Northeast Division championship.

Mississippi rallied from a 3-1 third period deficit to tie the game with Dumont's shorthanded goal and send it into the extra session.

Kevin Ulanski opened the scoring for Colorado nearly nine minutes into the first period, but Adam Smyth tied it at 13:43 of the second period, assisted by Stephen Margeson and Dallas Steward for a 1-1 tie.

However, Colorado answered that with a pair of goals, one from Aaron Schneekloth 22 seconds after Smyth scored and a shorthanded, unassisted goal from Ed McGrane at 19:48 of the second period for a 3-1 lead at the second intermission.

David Simoes started the RiverKings' comeback at 3:28 of the final frame with his second goal of the year and first on the power play. Dumont's first heroics came just over ten minutes later at 13:43 of the third , a shorthanded goal assisted by Derek Landmesser, who picked up two assists on the night.

Following a scoreless overtime session, Mississippi opened the shootout with goals from Martin Gascon and Dumont's eventual game-winning goal. Ryan Tobler scored for Colorado against RiverKings' goaltender Kevin Beech, but Derek Landmesser scored the insurance goal in the fourth to give the RiverKings a 3-1 decision in the shootout and the 4-3 victory.

Mississippi out shot the Eagles 51-24 for the game and was 1-for-9 on the power play, while Colorado was scoreless in four power play chances.

Beech won his 30th game of the season (30-10-3) with a 21 save effort, while Andrew Penner (26-5-3) was again saddled with the loss against the RiverKings with a 47-save effort. Penner ended the regular season 0-3-1 against Mississippi.

Mississippi is on the road Tuesday night against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at 7:05 PM. Bossier-Shreveport is the RiverKings' next home opponent in a two-game series on Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th.
