RiverKings to Stay in Northern Conference, no Divisional Alignments
July 8, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- When the Mississippi RiverKings take the ice to start the 2009-2010 Central Hockey League (CHL) regular season this October, they will be competing with six other teams for a Northern Conference championship. The CHL has announced the conference alignments and playoff format for the upcoming season. Most notably absent from the alignment is that there will be no divisional set up this year; the 15 member teams are being divided into Northern and Southern Conference with seven teams in the Northern Conference and eight in the Southern Conference. Members of the Northern Conference this year, in addition to the RiverKings, will be Bossier-Shreveport, Colorado, the new Missouri Mavericks, Rapid City, Tulsa, and Wichita. The Southern Conference will consist of the seven Texas-based franchises, and Arizona. They include the new Allen Americans, Amarillo, Arizona, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Odessa, Rio Grande Valley, and the Texas Brahmas. Ten of the 15 teams will qualify for the post-season playoffs, as five teams from each conference will be involved in the run for the Ray Miron President's Cup championship. Teams in each conference will be seeded first through fifth, based on point totals. The fourth and fifth seeds in each conference will play a best-of-three first round series, with the winner to play the number one seed of their conference in a best-of-seven semifinal series. The second and third seeds in each conference will play each other in the other best-of-seven semifinal. The winners of the semi-final series in each conference will next play each other for their respective conference championship, also in a best-of-seven series. The two remaining teams, one in each conference, will be paired in the league finals, another best-of-seven series, for the Ray Miron President's Cup championship. The higher seed in each conference series will determine the team with the home ice advantage for that particular series. In the Ray Miron President's Cup finals, the team with the higher regular season point total will have the home ice advantage for that series. Tiebreakers to help determine playoff seeding for the post-season will be: 1.) most wins, 2.) head-to-head records, and 3.) goals for-against differential.
