Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (26-15-7) had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 5-2 loss to the Fayetteville FireAntz (24-19-3) on Thursday night.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Fayetteville found the back of the net first as Josh McQuade set up Kyle Gibbons in the slot to put the FireAntz on top 1-0. The RiverKings countered as Cullen Bradshaw, on the power play, set up Matt Harrington on the doorstep to tie the game at one with just 24 seconds left in the opening frame.
Fayetteville took control of the second. Kyllian Kirkwood gave the FireAntz their lead by just 1:55 into the middle frame when his shot from the point bounced off a body in front of Peter Di Salvo to go up 2-1. Ten minutes later, Joseph Manno took a shot from the high slot that found the back of the net to give the FireAntz a 3-1. Four minutes later, Gibbons tallied his second of the game on a pass from McQuade once again to put Fayetteville up 4-1 going into the third.
In the third, the FireAntz extended their lead on a Cole Wilson shot that slipped past Di Salvo to put the visitors up by four. Di Salvo was then replaced by Garrett Sheehan.
The RiverKings tallied a goal late. Harrington notched his second goal of the game off a rebound of a Charlie Mosey shot to cut the deficit to three, but it was not enough as they fell to the FireAntz 5-2 in their first meeting of the season.
Peter Di Salvo (12-4-2) took the loss after stopping 21 of 26 shots against. Garrett Sheehan did not get the decision after stopping all 11 shots he faced. Parker Van Buskirk (15-15-3) stopped 20 of 22 shots against in the win.
The RiverKings scored on one of their five opportunities on the power play, while Fayetteville was held scoreless on their lone man advantage chance.
The RiverKings are back tomorrow night for a rematch against the FireAntz at 7:05 p.m. for their second annual Princess Night with the Snow Queen and the Ice Princess! For more information, visit riverkings.com or call 662-342-1755.
