LAFAYETTE, La. - Linden Bahm scored two goals in regulation and notched the game winning goal in the shootout as the Mississippi RiverKings (22-11-6) erased a three-goal deficit as they knocked off the Louisiana IceGators (18-18-4) with a 5-4 shootout victory on Sunday afternoon in Lafayette.
The RiverKings jumped out to a lead just under three minutes into the game. Sam Higgins' shot from the slot beat Adam Courchaine over the shoulder to put the RiverKings on top 1-0.
Louisiana then scored four straight to take a 4-1 lead. Zac Frischmon tied the game at one with under four minutes to play in the first on a breakaway on a pass from Ben Kramer. Then, at 2:29 into the second. Jake Hauswirth collected a rebound off of a John Daniels shot and beat Garrett Sheehan to give the IceGators a 2-1 lead. Just over 1:30 later, Kramer tallied his second assist of the night as he set up Luke Sandler in front of the RiverKings net to put Louisiana up 3-1 before Dylan Hood took a Luke Sandler pass on the doorstep and slipped it past Sheehan to put the 'Gators up by three just 5:32 into the second.
The RiverKings battled back midway through the second. Linden Bahm capitalized on a scramble in front of Courchaine and slipped it to the back of the net on the power play to cut the deficit to 4-2. At 14:14 into the period, Todd Hosmer's long pass set up Cullen Bradshaw whose backhand shot beat Courchaine to bring the RiverKings within one going into the third.
After the RiverKings killed off a five-minute major penalty, they tied the game at four. Bahm notched his second goal of the night on a shot from the top of the left circle 9:16 into the third period to tie the game and send it to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. Neither team found the back of the net until the third round when Dylan Hood beat Sheehan glove side to put the 'Gators up 1-0. Then, with the RiverKings needing a goal to continue on, Charlie Mosey lifted a shot over Courchaine to force an extra round where Linden Bahm tallied the go-ahead goal and Garrett Sheehan stopped Jeremy Boyer as the RiverKings came from behind to beat the IceGators 5-4.
Garrett Sheehan (8-7-4) stopped 35 of 39 shots against in the win. Adam Courchaine (10-10-3) took the shootout loss after stopping 23 of 27 shots against.
The RiverKings scored once on two power play opportunities, while Louisiana was held to one goal on three chances with the man-advantage including a five-minute major power play opportunity.
The RiverKings are back on home ice Friday and Saturday February 26 and 27 against the Macon Mayhem. For ticket information, call 662-342-1755 or visit RiverKings.com.
