WEEK IN REVIEW (1-1)
Friday, October 19: Mississippi 2, Bossier-Shreveport 1
Defenseman Jason Lawmaster scored midway through the third period to lead the RiverKings to a 2-1 opening night victory over the Mudbugs at the DCC. Lawmaster took the puck off a face off in the left wing circle and skated behind the goal with it. He threw the puck at the goal from the right win side and it eluded Mudbugs goalie John DeCaro. The puck slithered over the goal line with 10:33 remaining for the winning goal. Lawmaster had to sweat it out in the end in the penalty box, though. He took a tripping penalty with 1:51 left and the Mudbugs had a couple chances to tie the game. However, Larry Sterling made the final of his 21 saves with 35 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
Saturday, October 20: Youngstown 4, Mississippi 3
Joel Irving's shorthanded goal with 6:01 remaining in the game proved to be the difference as the Steelhounds defeated the RiverKings 4-3 at the DCC. Irving scored his second goal of the game as he darted around RiverKings defenseman Steve Makway in the left circle. He fired a shot over Sterling's left shoulder that rattled around the frame of the goal before dropping down inside the net. The Steelhounds improved to 2-0 on their season-opening 14 game road trip.
RIVERKINGS HERE AND THERE
Hello to Centomo, away goes Boucher
The RiverKings have brought 2001-2002 Central Hockey League Rookie of the Year Sebastien Centomo back into the fold.
Centomo went 16-1 with a 2.09 GAA and a .934 save percentage with the team in his first season. That performance vaulted him into the American Hockey League for the second half of the season with the St. John's Maple Leafs. Centomo eventually earned the Baby Leafs' starting job in the playoffs, but that wasn't the highlight of his rookie season.
Because of an injury to Curtis Joseph, the Toronto Maple Leafs called up Centomo to back up Corey Schwab for a game in Detroit against the Red Wings. When Schwab surrendered three goals on 13 shots in the first period, Centomo replaced him and played the last two periods. He gave up goals to Igor Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, and Sean Avery, but he also made 12 saves.
RiverKings fans remember Centomo most recently in an Oklahoma City Blazers uniform. He spent last season and part of the 2005-06 campaign with the Blazers. As a professional, Centomo sports a regular season record of 103-75-20 with a 2.87 GAA and a .912 save percentage.
To make room on the roster, the RiverKings waived goalie Nick Boucher.
Need a flu shot? Come to a game!
Shots on the Spot of Bartlett will administer vaccinations at the DCC on Saturday, November 17 as the RiverKings host the Mudbugs. The game won't start until 7:05 p.m., but fans can enter as soon as 6 p.m. to receive influenza, Hepatitis B, pneumonia, and Vitamin B-12 shots at normal costs. Shots on the Spot will make vaccines available to fans until the end of the second intermission.
Shots on the Spot offers on-site vaccinations and wellness services throughout the Mid-South to corporations, churches, and community groups. The company comes to facilities and offices by scheduling services around their workdays, 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
Under the B . . . a cow patty!?
The Kings Court Booster Club and the Junior StreetKings will present the first-ever Cow Patty Madness on Saturday, November 17 at 11 a.m. at the Hernando Civic Center. Both groups will share the proceeds from this event, which will take place on a giant bingo card at an HCC field. They will sell tickets for card squares until November 10. On the day of the event, Betsy the cow will conduct some very personal business for all to see. The winner Betsy "selects" will receive 20 percent of the profits.
