RiverKings news and notes

March 29, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

The RiverKings' 64 shots in the loss to Tulsa on Saturday were the most by a team this season in the CHL and surpassed the season-high for the RiverKings by 13. The team's earlier season-high was 51 at Austin on November 26.

Ryan Campbell alone had 12 shots in the game, more than half of what Tulsa had as a team (21). That total of 12 shots was the most by a RiverKings player this season.

Three RiverKings players played in all 64 game this season; Travis Banga, Peter Robertson and Ryan Watson.

Derek Landmesser is the first defenseman to ever lead the RiverKings in overall scoring. His 81 points (17-64-81) break his own record of 66 points, set last season, as the most points in a season by a RiverKings defenseman. The total of 81 is also the most by a CHL defenseman since Bernie John had 85 (23-62-85) in the 2000-01 season with Indianapolis. Oklahoma City's Hardy Sauter holds the record for defensive scoring in a season with 109 (22-87) in the 97-98 season.

Travis Banga finished the season strong with 20 points, 8 goals and 12 assists, in the 13 games in March. Banga saved his best for the home crowd as 46 of his 73 points and 22 of his team-high 34 goals came on home ice in 2005-06.

Ryan Watson's 2 power play goals in the season finale on Saturday gave him 17 for the season. That total led the team and was tied for fourth in the CHL.

These RiverKings established career highs: Derek Landmesser with 64 assists and 81 points; Travis Banga with 64 games, 34 goals, 39 assists and 73 points; Ryan Campbell with 63 games, 23 goals, 38 assists and 61 points; Kevin Harris with 9 assists and 12 points; Chad McIver with 13 assists and 16 points; Tim Plett with 63 games; Peter Robertson with 44 assists and 51 points; and Ryan Watson with 25 goals, 34 assists and 59.

On a down note, the RiverKings over-all record of 22-37-5 and winning percentage of .383 is the second poorest in franchise history. It was also the first time since the 99-00 season that the team has finished the season below .500. The team also finished below .500 (15-16-1) at home for just the second time in franchise history.

The RiverKings finished the season 49 standings points and in third place in the Northeast Division.

Derek Landmesser led the team in multi-point (24) and multi-assist (14) games. Don Parsons led the team with 8 multi-goal games.

The RiverKings averaged 49.25 shots on goal in their final 4 games of the season. They averaged just over 34 shots over the entire season.

The RiverKings finished with the second best power play in the league at 18.9% and the 13th ranked penalty kill at 82.3%.

With his 29 goals, Don Parsons finished the season ninth on the All-Time Minor-Pro Goal Scoring List with 585 and fourth on the CHL's all-time list with 290.

Rookie forward Darrell Stoddard finished eighth in CHL rookie scoring with 41 points (18-23-41).

The RiverKings also had 3 of the top 5 rookie PIM leaders. Paul McBrien (258 PIM) finished second. Sheldon Wenzel finished fourth (232) and Stoddard finished fifth (184). Chris Bain, who played with Wichita and Fort Worth this season, led all rookies with 263 PIM.
