RiverKings land big, physical defenseman

SOUTHAVEN --- Memphis RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin McClelland announced today that the Central Hockey League team has signed defenseman Steve Makway to a contract for the 2006-2007 season.

Makway is a 6-foot-5, 230 pound native of Trail, British Columbia who will be entering his third pro season. He split last season with Flint and Missouri in the United Hockey League (UHL); compiling five goals, 12 assists and 158 penalty minutes in his combined 58 games between the two clubs.

The 23 year-old Makway started his pro career in 2004-2005 with the Laredo Bucks (CHL). He played in 56 games, notching three goals, nine assists and 165 penalty minutes with the Bucks.

Prior to turning pro, Makway won a Memorial Cup Championship (Canadian major junior hockey championship) with the Kootenay Ice of the WHL in the 2001-2002 season. Along with his time with the Ice, Makway also played junior hockey with the Tri City Americans (WHL) and the Battlefords North Stars (SJHL).

This signing now gives the RiverKings 16 players signed to contracts for the upcoming season.
