LAREDO, Texas - The 2006 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks announced today at a press conference, at the Laredo National Bank branch at 9801 McPherson, that they have signed defenseman Steve Weidlich. Weidlich, who has been with the team since the inaugural 2002-03 season, is tied for third all-time in franchise history with 180 regular season games played. He is the third returning player signed by the Bucks this off season and the 12th player signed overall. The Bucks are offering a family four pack of season tickets for the 2006-07 CHL regular season, which works out to just over $7 a seat per game and is a 48 % savings off walkup prices. Weidlich, 6'2" 215 pounds, played in 42 games this past season with the Bucks. He tied a career high with six goals and his 12 points were the second highest of his career. His six goals came on 48 shots and his 12.5 % shooting percentage was second among CHL defenseman. In the post-season he had four assists and was plus 12, which was second overall.

"Steve has been a mainstay with our team since he first came to Laredo in our inaugural season," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "I am thinking about putting him at forward this year because he has done well when he has played up front in the past. He is a huge contributor to our team and I am glad he is coming back."

Weidlich scored an overtime winner this season against Rio Grande Valley on February 8th. Four of his six goals came against Rio Grande Valley. He also was called up to San Antonio in the AHL. In seven games with the Rampage he had one assist.

"I am excited to come back," said Weidlich. "It has been a great four years in Laredo. Winning a couple of championships and going to the finals three straight years has been awesome. I am looking forward to making another run at the President's Cup and I can't wait to see the fans coming out to the LEC."

Weidlich has played in 58 playoff games with Laredo, the most in franchise history, and is tied for the fifth best plus / minus rating in franchise history at plus 68. In addition he holds the Bucks franchise record for best plus / minus in a playoff game at plus six versus Amarillo on 4/13/04.

Weidlich, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, began the 2004-05 season oversees in England with the Bracknell Bees however he returned to the Gateway City in November of 2004. Injuries limited him to 36 games with the Bucks where he totaled three goals and eight assists. In the playoffs he played in 15 of 16 games as he helped the Bucks advance to the President's Cup Finals for the second straight season.

In 2003-04 he played in 58 games and had six goals and 15 assists. In the 2004 CHL playoffs he had three goals, including an overtime winner in the first round against Rio Grande Valley, and four assists as he helped the Bucks capture the President's Cup title.

In 2002-03 he had a goal and 11 assists in 44 games. In the post-season he added a goal and three assists as he helped the Bucks advance to the Southern Conference Finals.

The Bucks open training camp on October 9th at the LEC. The regular season begins on October 21st at Corpus Christi. Laredo will have their home opener against Rio Grande Valley on October 28th at the LEC.
