SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (4-1-0) retired the iconic number 55 jersey of current Head Coach Derek Landmesser in a pregame ceremony then defeated the Macon Mayhem (1-3-1), 4-3, in overtime Friday night at the Landers Center.
After the ceremony honoring the former RiverKings captain, the current captain began a big night for himself, by giving the RiverKings a 1-0 lead at 5:47 of the first period. He took a pass from Ian Young and jetted past everyone down the left wing to beat goalie Garrett Bartus with a wrist shot for his second goal of the season. Young was given the assist, his first professional point. Thomas extended the lead with his second goal of the period at 16:11 with a rocket from the high slot that went off the crossbar and in past Bartus. Charlie Mosey and Ryan Marcuz assisted on the captain's second goal.
The Mayhem began the uphill climb for a comeback early in the third as Josh Ranalli deflected in a puck that was sent in from the left point. Ranalli tipped it past Matt Grogan to pull the Mayhem within one at 4:18 of the second. Less than five minutes later, however, the RiverKings reclaimed their two goal lead as Thomas completed a hat trick. He took a pass from Mosey and blasted a shot from the left circle to give the RiverKings a 3-1 lead, with Mosey and Marcuz assisting again. Macon made it a one-goal game again late in the second as Daniel Gentzler flipped a puck over Grogan at the left post, making it 3-2 at 18:14.
The Mayhem pulled even with under six minutes to play in the third period as former RiverKing Lucas LeBelle beat Grogan to tie the game at three and force overtime for the first time for the RiverKings this season.
After back-and-forth chances in the first minute of the 3-on-3 overtime, the RiverKings ended the game at 1:10, with Marcuz converting on a rush with Devin Mantha. Mantha flipped the puck to Marcuz streaking up the middle and after Bartus made the initial save on Marcuz's redirection, Marcuz poked the puck into the net while prone on the ice, giving the RiverKings a 4-3 win, their fourth win in a row, to keep them in first place in the SPHL.
