RiverKings have good showing in first annual "M" Awards

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Memphis Sport Magazine asked their readers what their Memphis area favorites are in its first ever "M" Awards. The July/August issue that became available on Monday, July 2 reveals the results and the Mississippi RiverKings are listed fourth or better in four categories. Also, the team's home, the DeSoto Civic Center, is mentioned twice.

The nominations for the awards were introduced in the May/June issue and voting took place through the magazine's website (www.memphissport.net) and mail-in ballots.

In the final results, the RiverKings finished second as the Favorite Team with 17.21% of the vote, finishing behind the University of Memphis Men's Basketball team who took home the "M" Award with 36.48%.

Central Hockey League Coach of the Year Kevin McCelland was the third favorite coach finishing with 14.07%. U. of M. Basketball Coach John Calipari (39.63%) and U. of M. Football Coach Tommy West (16.67%) placed first and second, respectively.

For Favorite Mascot, RiverThing was fourth in a very close race capturing 14.62% of the votes. A pair of University of Memphis mascots, Pouncer (41.14%) and Tom II (18.41%), finished one and two. The Grizzlies' Griz was third with 15.55%.

CHL Broadcaster of the Year Jim Erickson came in third in the favorite radio personality category being selected on 14.73% of the ballots. ESPN 730's afternoon host Chris Vernon won the "M" with 26.22% while Sports 56's afternoon drive personality and the voice of the Memphis Tiger Football and Basketball Dave Woloshin was next at 15%. Marky B., a RiverKings PA announcer who was on the ballot for his sports updates during the Drake and Zeke morning show on 98.1 The Max, finished fourth with 13.99%.

The DeSoto Civic Center took third in both Favorite Concessions and Favorite Sporting Venue. Fed Ex Forum and AutoZone Park won those categories, respectively.

The results in all 21 categories can be found in the July/August issue of Memphis Sport Magazine.
