COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Mississippi RiverKings (2-1-0) scored five goals over the final two periods to double up the Columbus Cottonmouths (0-2-1), 6-3, at the Columbus Civic Center Friday night.
The Cottonmouths grabbed the lead at 5:33 into the first period when Kyle Brodie scored on a deflection on a left point shot, getting it past Peter Di Salvo for a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later the RiverKings pulled even on a 2-on-1, when Matt Harrington found Mark Pustin at the left circle. Pustin faked a shot then tucked the puck in on a backhand at 8:29.
The score remained tied into the second, but that only lasted for 18 second into the second before Linden Bahm scored his first of the season to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead. Bahm deposited the puck in an open net after a terrific pass play between him, Ben Rubin and Michael Beaudry, who both got assists on the goal, Less than two minutes later Mike Grace blasted a slap shot from the top of the left circle under the crossbar to put the RiverKings up 3-1. Then at 4:07 Ryan Marcuz snapped a right circle shot under the crossbar for a 4-1 lead. The Cottonmouth made it a one-goal game by scoring two straight goals to close the second. The first was by Chris Rial at 4:52 and the second was at 14:13 by Louis Belisle.
The RiverKings iced the game away in the third period with two goals. Dean Willmott scored his first as a member of the RiverKings by hammering a shot after a Devin Mantha faceoff win at 7:02 of the third. Later in the period, Pustin scored his second of the game and third in two games after one-timing a cross-ice pass from Harrington at the left circle at 13:29, putting the RiverKings up 6-3.
Both teams finished with 38 shots, with Di Salvo stopping 35 for the win and Shannon Szabados turning aside 32 shots in a losing effort.
