RiverKings defeat Amarillo for seventh straight home victory

SOUTHAVEN---Five different RiverKings scored goals and David Lemanowicz held an opponent to one goal for the fifth time in his last nine starts in Memphis' 5-1 win over the playoff-bound Amarillo Gorillas Thursday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. Travis Banga assisted on three of the goals to help the ‘Kings to their sixth straight home win and their eighth win in their last ten games overall.

Don Parsons got the offense going after 14:46 of scoreless hockey in the first with his 52nd goal of the season and 22nd on the power-play. Parsons is tops in the C.H.L. in both categories. Ted Crowley, celebrating his ¾ Irish heritage, gave his team a 2-0 St. Patty's Day lead with his patented one-time slap shot at 16:17 of the second period. And it appeared that the period would end that way. That was until former RiverKing netminder Daniel Boisclair turned the puck over behind his own net and Scott English wrapped the puck around into an empty net with just four seconds to play in the second period.

The Gorillas, who clinched a playoff spot in the Southern Conference and can still earn home-ice advantage, showed their resolve by getting on the board with leading scorer Derek Hahn's power-play tally at 5:04 of the third. The RiverKings second line would get to work just over two minutes later with defenseman Jeremy Goetzinger intercepting a pass at center, feeding Allan Carr at the wall and then Carr finding a net-attacking Tim Plett who went top shelf for his seventh of the season and his third in two games. That put the lead back at three with Peter Robertson adding a late goal to put the final at 5-1.

Lemanowicz was strong in the nets as he turned away 32 of 33 shots. Boisclair took the loss in his return to Memphis and fell to 3-3-0 in his six games with the Gorillas. Derek Landmesser assisted on Crowley's goal and in the process set a single season career-high for points with 65.

The RiverKings play their second-to-last game of the season Friday night when another playoff-bound team, the Wichita Thunder, skate onto the D.C.C. ice sheet. Game time is 7:05 and the first 1,500 fans receive a Memphis Redbirds puck. It is also Faith and Family Night, Southaven Community Night and the final post-game skate of the season will follow the game.
