RiverKings add winger for 2006-07 season
June 8, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- Memphis RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin McClelland announced today that the team has signed forward Derek Campbell. Campbell will be entering his fourth professional season and is the fifth player to sign a contract with the RiverKings for the 2006-2007 season.
The Duncan, British Columbia native played his rookie season in 2003-2004 with the Toledo Storm of the ECHL.
He then moved on to the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL in 2004-2005 and the first part of last season. Later in the 2005-2006 season, he signed to play in Holland with the Geleen Eaters. The Eaters play in the top league in the Netherlands.
"I am excited to be coming back to the U.S. to play after finishing last season in Holland," Campbell said. "I have heard Memphis is great place to play and it sounds like Coach McClelland is bringing in some good players."
His numbers during his first two pro seasons were almost identical; five goals and nine assists in 55 games with Toledo and five goals and nine assists in 56 games with Victoria. Splitting time between Victoria and the team in Holland last season, Campbell finished with a combined seven goals and seven assists in 25 games. He also can take the role of a team leader as he was an Assistant Captain during his time with the Salmon Kings.
The 6-foot, 195 pound Campbell is a gritty forward and a good fore-checker whose skills can make him a force in either zone.
"I would describe myself as a two-way power forward and the rough stuff is definitely part of my game," he said. "I love hitting and getting involved in the physical part of the game."
Campbell's junior hockey days were spent in the BCHL with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, Trail Smoke Eaters, and the Aberni Valley Bulldogs from 2000 to 2003. He was a BCHL All Star with Trail in 2001-2003 and with Aberni in 2002-2003. That season, he scored 38 goals and had 38 assists in 50 games for the Bulldogs.
Campbell joins fellow forward Travis Banga, defensemen Derek Landmesser and Bobby Gates, and goalie Larry Sterling as players signed for the 2006-2007 RiverKings season.
