Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Mississippi RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski believes the latest addition to his roster will provide a strong work ethic to go with a hard-nosed, on-ice attitude, when the team laces the skates for the first time this October at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
The RiverKings have announced they are adding defenseman David Simoes to its roster for the 2008-09 campaign. Simoes comes to the RiverKings for his second season in the CHL and becomes the sixth player inked by the team for the upcoming campaign.
The 23-year old native of Vanderhoof, British Columbia, Canada played most of last year with the New Mexico Scorpions, before being acquired by the Youngstown SteelHounds at the trade deadline in February to complete a deal between the teams initiated in November of last year. Simoes, who is 5-foot-10 and 205 pounds, totaled 45 games with New Mexico and 18 with Youngstown. He also played in five of the SteelHounds' playoff games.
Last season in his initial CHL campaign, David scored a goal and added five assists for the Scorpions, and then added an assist for the SteelHounds in the stretch run of the campaign. He did not score any points in the playoffs and picked up 19 penalty minutes.
Simoes came to the CHL from the Canadian collegiate ranks, where he played in seven games for South Alberta Institute of Technology during the 2006-07 season. Before that, he spent five seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League, primarily at Williams Lake, with other stops being at Prince George, Merritt, and Burnaby.
His final BCHL season at Burnaby was his best, scoring six goals and adding 30 assists to go with 226 penalty minutes. His team went on to win the Canadian National Junior "A" championship, the RBC Royal Bank Cup. Simoes earned the "Most Popular Player" Award in the team's post-season honors.
Kaminski feels Simoes will provide a positive presence to each shift on the ice. "Simmer brings character and heart. He has an unbelievable work ethic, mental toughness and is by far the toughest I've seen pound for pound. He means business every shift with his "no holds barred" attitude. He will be a fan favorite in no time."
RiverKings' season tickets start as low as $48 a month and voucher plans start for as little of $46. In addition, group, birthday and fundraising packages are also available. All it takes to get started is a phone call to the RiverKings' offices at 662-342-1755, or stop in during business hours Monday-Friday at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
