RiverKings Add Rookie Forward Ferguson
August 25, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) have added rookie forward Shane Ferguson to the roster for the upcoming 2009-2010 regular season, according to Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski. Ferguson makes the move up to the professional ranks from the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), where he played for the Markham Waxers last season.
Kaminski is looking forward to seeing what the 20-year old Ferguson will bring to the RiverKings. "From the scouting report on Shane, this kid brings a little bit of everything," Kaminski said. "He has great vision to see the ice and is an excellent passer, but he also brings a feisty, relentless work ethic along with character and grit. He'll get his nose dirty for his teammates and we're excited to see what he can provide in camp."
The 5-foot-10, 170 pound native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania led the Waxers in scoring with 85 points last year, in assists with 64, and in penalty minutes with 150. In 13 playoff contests, Ferguson added three goals and seven points with 32 penalty minutes.
Shane's assist totals led the OJHL for helpers and his point total put him in the top ten for that category at number ten. Last season also saw Ferguson take part in the "Battle of Ontario" junior hockey all-star game last January.
Ferguson fashions himself as someone who is not afraid to play physical and still provide offensive production. "Last year with the Waxers was my best year overall," Shane said. "I consider myself as a defensive-minded forward who can move the puck very well."
Shane came to Markham after a year with the Toronto Dixie Bees of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL), where he netted 15 goals and had 28 assists for 43 points and 127 PIMS in 45 contests.
His first season in the OPJHL during the 2006-07 campaign was split between the Wellington Dukes, where he started the year, and the Huntsville Otters, where he went after just three games of the season. In 35 Huntsville appearances, Shane scored eight goals and had 22 assists for 30 points and 92 penalty minutes.
Ferguson comes with some major league bloodlines, as his father George played ten years in the NHL from 1974-to-1984 with Toronto, Pittsburgh, and the Minnesota North Stars, playing nearly 800 regular season games in his career.
