Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
Richmond, VA-On a beautiful evening in southern Virginia, the Riverhounds (7-6-8) fell to the Kickers (10-5-6) by conceding a goal in both halves. The defending champions eliminated the Riverhounds from the playoffs and the chance to compete for the League Championship.
The Kickers' counter attack proved to be too much for the Riverhounds as the Kickers converted twice in the run of play. Kickers' forward, Matt Delicate was involved in both goals. Delicate collected the first goal for the Kickers by heading a Dave Hertel cross just under the crossbar and past Riverhounds' goalkeeper, Hunter Gilstrap to put the Kickers up in the 36th minute. In the 50th minute, Delicate headed a Sascha Gorres service back for the late runner Bobby Foglesong who confidently struck Delicate's set into the back of the net.
The Riverhounds continued to push forward trying to cut the lead in half, but each opportunity was denied by Kickers' goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale. The most notable scoring opportunity came in the 90th minute on a wall pass from Jeremy Deighton to Travis MacKenzie. The two combined inside the penalty area, but Pascale was up for the challenge and pushed MacKenzie's first time shot wide and out of trouble.
The Kickers will play the Charleston Battery (11-4-5) Saturday, August 28th at Blackbaud Stadium for the League Championship. The match will be broadcasted live at 6:00 PM on Fox Soccer Channel.
The Riverhounds' players, coaches and front office would like to thank all of our fans, families of the team, the Academy and the United Soccer League for their support throughout the 2010 season. We look forward to another winning season in 2011.
