Riverhounds Perfect in Pre-Season

April 13, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

The Riverhounds FC traveled to Jim Weir Stadium at Belle Vernon Area High School to face off against the Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania Wednesday. The evening began with a free clinic for all of the area youth by the Riverhounds and Vulcan players.

The Riverhounds opened the scoring with their all time career leading scorer, David Flavius, at the 11th minute. The unassisted goal was originally deflected off a Cal. U. player from a Gregg Victor shot.

The HOUNDS® scored again when Midfielder Derek MacKenzie returned a deflection. MacKenzie placed the ball inside the left post to close out the first half (Riverhounds 2 -Vulcans 0).

Lightening forced a 45 minute delay in the second half. When play resumed, both teams displayed offensive and defensive exchanges. Neither team scored until the 76th minute when the Riverhounds' newcomer Walter Blake made it 3-0.

Riverhound Danny Hartung closed out the scoring not long after at the 78th minute running the score up to 4-0.

The Vulcans had an excellent opportunity to break the shut-out put, but were turned away by a great save in the open by returning Keeper Chris Robinson in the 79th minute.

The Riverhounds will be back in action Tuesday, April 18th for a practice session, inter-squad scrimmage, and autograph session at Upper St. Clair High School. Admission and parking are free. The Riverhounds will open at home May 5th and 6th when Head Coach Gene Klein and Assistant Coach Paul Child make their home coaching debut for the 2006 Riverhounds campaign. Tickets are still available at www.riverhounds.com or by calling 724-250-9555.
