RiverHawks Tie SPHL Record as They Defeat FireAntz 7-2
January 7, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks tied a Southern Professional Hockey League record by scoring three short-handed goals on their way to defeating the Fayetteville FireAntz 7-2 Saturday night at the James Brown Arena. Six different RiverHawks chipped in with goals on the night as they took the first game of back-to-back games against Fayetteville.
Forwards Branden Kosolofsky and Jim Gehring scored short-handed goals just 27 seconds apart in the second period to give the RiverHawks a dominant hold over the game. The third short-handed goal came in the third period when Jesse Echternach scored.
Goaltender Peter Skoggard made 25 saves to pick up the victory, his first since returning to the team in December.
The RiverHawks scored three goals in the first and second period to give themselves a seemingly insurmountable lead. In the first it was Kyle Watson who got the RiverHawks out to an early lead just over a minute into the game. It stayed that way for quite a while until just past the 16-minute mark, when Gehring and Egor Mironov scored just 44 seconds apart to make it a three-goal game. Mironov's goal would go down as the game's winning goal, and it was his second in as many games since re-joining the RiverHawks.
The second period featured the first two short-handed goals of the game just over four minutes into the frame. The FireAntz showed signs of life just before the mid-way point when Bobby Reed converted a nice Chris Leveille pass for the team's power play goal. But, any hope the team had was snuffed out by the RiverHawks minutes later when Tyler Fernandez hammered in his second goal of his RiverHawks career.
The RiverHawks jumped right back into the goal column just over a minute into the third with Echternach's short-handed goal, which would close out the scoring for Augusta. The FireAntz would tally one late in the third stanza, as Andrew Willock beat Skoggard with the game all-but decided.
The win gives the RiverHawks a one-point lead on the Knoxville Ice Bears at the top of the SPHL standings as they head to Fayetteville for the second game of the home-and-home series between the two clubs tomorrow afternoon.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Wednesday, January 11th as they play the Columbus Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
