Riverhawks Sign Outfielder

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks have picked up a speedster, center fielder and possible leadoff hitter.
The team announced Wednesday that it has signed outfielder Ron Perodin, a former Minnesota farmhand who has four 20-steal seasons in seven years of professional baseball. He has played for the Sussex Skyhawks of the independent Can-Am League each of the last three seasons.
The left-handed hitter was limited to 44 games last season because of a knee injury, but still stole 11 bases. He hit.219 with two home runs and 13 RBI. The previous year, Perodin hit.302 no home runs and 43 RBI. He stole 26 bases.
"He's supposed to be the best defensive outfielder in the Can-Am League," RiverHawks co-owner and director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi said.
Perodin has a.973 career fielding percentage and has 23 career assists.
The Minnesota Twins drafted Perodin out of El Camino (Calif.) Community College in the 27th round in 2002. He advanced as far as high Class A in the Minnesota organization.
Perodin is a.275 career hitter with 137 career steals. The 29-year-old has LS-5 status in the Northern League.
The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010.
