LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks have signed a patient, speedy hitter to play second base.
Rockford's only professional baseball team announced Wednesday that it has signed infielder David Cooper, a former Arizona farmhand. The Diamondbacks drafted Cooper out of Mt. Olive College in the 44th round two years ago.
In Cooper's rookie season, he walked a Northwest League-leading 66 times and stole 19 bases, fourth in the short-season Class A circuit, for Yakima. He hit .252 with no home runs and 16 RBI. Last year, Cooper batted .226 with no home runs and 26 RBI for high Class A Visalia of the California League. He drew 39 walks and stole 16 bases. The third-year professional has a career on-base percentage of .380.
Cooper primarily played shortstop last year, but in his 19 games at second base, he committed just two errors and had a .973 fielding percentage.
The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010.
