LOVES PARK, Ill. - Baseball season hasn't come to an end for some Rockford RiverHawks.
Catcher Robert Sabates and pitcher Jose Mateo are playing in the first-year Florida Winter Baseball League. The four-team FWBL begins its season on Oct. 30. Sabates and Mateo both play for the Miami Diamantes.
Sabates, a Cuban exile, makes his home in Miami. The former Chicago Cubs farmhand batted .264 with five home runs and 47 RBI for the RiverHawks this summer.
Mateo, a native of the Dominican Republic, now lives in Palm Beach, Fla. The right-hander was 1-1 with a 6.25 earned-run average in 17 appearances with Rockford.
FWBL rosters include both indy-league players as well as talent under contract to major-league organizations. Each team has a 60-game schedule.
The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010.
