Riverdogs Edge Out Pelicans 2-1 In Rain-Shortened Contest

Rain falling in the bottom of the fifth inning caused an early end to Saturday night's game with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans falling to the Charleston RiverDogs 2-1. It was Charleston's second win of the series as their record moved up to 7-13 while the Pelicans dropped to 11-8.

Moises Ballesteros (2-2, HR, RBI, BB) provided the only offense for the Birds with a solo home run in the top of the fifth. The Pelicans stranded 10 runners on base and went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Koen Moreno (0-2) took the loss after allowing an earned run in his 2 1/3 innings with four hits and six walks given up while striking out two. Jose Romero followed with one earned run through 1 2/3 innings off three walks and five strikeouts.

Charleston left 11 on base and was outhit 5-4 but still got the job done with Cooper Kinney (2-2, 2B, BB) leading the way with a pair of hits and a run scored. Kamren James (1-1, RBI, BB) and Odalys Peguero (0-1, RBI, 2 BB) were responsible for both runs.

Saturday's win went to reliever Kikito Severino (1-0) after throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and three walks while striking out three. Samuel Mejia earned his first save of the year after striking out three through 1 2/3 frames but allowing the solo home run.

The RiverDogs opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third. After Kinney led off the frame with a double, James lined a single to left to bring in a run.

Another run came in for the home team in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Peguero drew a walk that scored Ryan Spikes to boost the RiverDogs' lead to 2-0.

Ballesteros hit his fourth home run of the year on a solo shot to right that led off the top of the fifth. The Pelicans struck out twice with runners on second and third to end the top of the fifth and effectively the game.
