Charleston RiverDogs News Release

For the 11th time in 11 years, fun returns to The Joe.

Headlined by the first appearance in Charleston of professional pillow fighting and Mayberry's Deputy, the Charleston RiverDogs have announced their promotional schedule for the upcoming season, their third as an affiliate of the New York Yankees.

"We're excited about our plans for 2007," said General Manager Dave Echols. "Our staff has lined up some great nights that the entire family will enjoy."

Pillow fighting makes its Lowcountry debut on Aug. 23 as a touring group of Canadian female professionals battle each other with pillows. And on June 29, the Mayberry Deputy comes to Charleston for the first time and is expected to bring his pal, Gomer (or is it Goober?).

And to help celebrate the first of two Military Appreciation Nights on May 16, the ever-so-popular Sgt. Slaughter of pro wrestling fame makes his first appearance at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Of course, midget wrestling returns on April 10.

As in the past, there will be the popular Saturday giveaways. Unique giveaways include 30-inch left-handed bats, replica jerseys of the Negro Leagues, Chelsea banks, umbrellas, beach towels and thermoses, among others.

Yet the RiverDogs, in their unique way, take things a step further, especially on June 30 with the annual "Kindness Beats Blindness Silent Auction, which benefits MUSC and the Storm Eye Institute."

Friday night's games will conclude with spectacular fireworks displays courtesy of Cricket Wireless. Tuesdays are Blue Moon's "Two for Tuesdays," with two tickets on sale for the price of one. All Wednesday games will have a special night while Thursdays are "Wild Wing Cafe Thirsty Thursdays," with dollar beers and other drink specials. Every Monday is "Dogs With A Cause," as the RiverDogs aid local non-profits with their special nights. Each Sunday game is "Charleston County Parks & Recreation and the Charleston Imax Theater Family Sundays" featuring a carnival atmosphere. Also on Sundays, kids are permitted to play catch on the field prior to the game and run the bases afterwards as RiverDogs players sign autographs.

Special theme nights include Karaoke Night, Bingo Night, Dog Days, Boy and Girl Scouts Nights, Play with My Potatoes Night, Independence Day Celebration on July 3, All You Can Eat Night, What If Interns Ran the Team Night?, Condiment Wars - Ketchup vs. Mustard and the popular Salute to the Negro Leagues Night.

And continuing with a RiverDogs tradition of hosting a Christian rock concert after a game, the group Jars of Clay will perform after the Sunday, Aug. 5, contest against Greensboro.

"Look, My Hot Dog Is Green" is another of the RiverDogs' promotions that returns this year as the hot dogs that are sold at the concession stands will be double-wrapped with anywhere from $2 to $100. Fans will be permitted to keep the money, along with the hot dog.

Also returning is the reigning "Clown Prince of Baseball" and the world's most famous nerd, Myron Noodleman, on June 15. And on Aug. 17, the RiverDogs and The Post and Courier will enshrine the newest members of the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame.

The fun starts on April 5 when the RiverDogs host the Greenville Drive in the season's opening spectacular, sponsored by Nucor Steel. Season tickets and a variety of mini-plans are available now by contacting the RiverDogs Box Office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
