Charleston RiverDogs News Release
(Charleston, SC)- While cries of "1918" joyously echoed from Connecticut to Maine Wednesday night, matching chants of "1948" could be heard from West Ashley to Goose Creek.
Now that the Red Sox have broken the infamous "Curse of the Bambino," it's time for RiverDogs Nation to embrace a ballclub that in 2005 will look to win its first pennant in 57 years. The focus of the baseball world now shifts from Boston to Charleston (forgetting about the Cubs, White Sox and Indians).
Coming off a 2004 season that saw the RiverDogs make the post-season for the first time since 1988, the team Saturday announced its 2005 schedule.
Charleston enters its first year as a Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The team will open the regular season April 7 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park with a home game against the Augusta Greenjackets.
Not only did the Capital City Bombers sweep the RiverDogs in the 2004 best-of-three Division Series, but weeks later the Bombers became a Boston Red Sox affiliate, creating a new chapter in the Charleston/Columbia rivalry. The Bombers enter Riley Park April 22 for the first Yankees/Red Sox Lowcountry clash. The two teams will meet 20 times during the regular season.
"Some payback is due after the way the Bombers swept us in the playoffs last year," RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols said. "When you add the Yankees and Red Sox to the mix, you have the ingredients for a pretty intense season series."
The Rome Braves will be in town on two very special dates this summer- for the Independence Extravaganza, July 3, and Fan Appreciation Day, September 1.
With a new schedule format cutting out most long bus trips, absent from the 2005 RiverDogs schedule are South Atlantic League opponents Charleston-WV, Delmarva, Hagerstown, Lake County and Lexington. The longest trip of the year is set for May 25-28, when the RiverDogs travel to Lakewood, NJ to take on the Lakewood BlueClaws.
The unbalanced schedule should make for some interesting division matchups. The RiverDogs and Greenjackets are scheduled to meet 27 times in 2005 with 15 of those games at Riley Park. Columbus, Rome and Savannah each appear on the schedule more than 19 times.
The RiverDogs have six homestands of eight games each, and the monthly home schedule is almost perfectly balanced. The team will host 12 games in April, 13 in May, 14 in June, 13 in July, 14 in Augusta and the regular season finale in September.
The South Atlantic League playoffs are scheduled to begin September 7.
Season tickets and mini-plans are available by contacting the RiverDogs Front Office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
