Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC -- Prior to the Revolutionary War, Paul Revere trampled through the Massachusetts countryside proclaiming, "The British are coming! The British are coming!"

Now, Charlie the RiverDog reminds Charlestonians and its neighbors that the "Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming!"

The 2005 season marks the RiverDogs' first as an affiliate of the New York Yankees so, naturally, there will be a New York theme to many of the events.

"All of our giveaways will feature both the RiverDogs' and Yankees' logo," said Director of Promotions Jim Pfander. "Our fans are happy that we're now with the Yankees, and we're going to have fun with it.

"Saturdays are our traditional giveaways days, and we'll be handing out things every Saturday," he added. "But we'll also have a New York theme every Saturday, like an inflatable Statue of Liberty, Rockettes-style dancers on the dugouts and more."

There will be the standard giveaways. But the RiverDogs, in their unique way, take things a step further, especially on June 25 with the "Kindness Beats Blindness Night Sponsored by MUSC and the Storm Eye Institute."

On that Saturday, the RiverDogs will be wearing the traditional Yankees' pinstripe uniforms with the famous "NY" logo, and the players will be handing over their jerseys on the field to the highest bidder immediately after the game. Proceeds will go to help fight Retinitis Pigmentosa.

"Someone will leave Riley Park on June 25 with a Yankees' jersey with the same number that Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and other great Yankees had," said Pfander. "That will be a very special night as we hope to raise a ton of money for the vision disease."

Other unique giveaways this season include "The Joe in Snow sponsored by Bayer" giveaway, a specially created snow globe that features Riley Park; "Win the Boss's Money" and a piggy bank giveaway; "Statue of Liberty Dashboard Ornament sponsored by Advance Auto Parts;" and the "Got Milk? Bobble Udder Giveaway sponsored by Pet Dairy and S.U.D.I.A.," which is a cow's udder that bobbles like a bobblehead's head.

Friday night's games will again conclude with a spectacular fireworks display courtesy of Sprint and Tuesdays will always be "Harris Teeter Two for Tuesdays," with two tickets on sale for the price of one. Thursdays are again "Wild Wing Thirsty Thursdays," with dollar beers and other drink specials, and Mondays are "Dogs With A Cause," as the RiverDogs aid local non-profits with their special nights. And all Sundays are "Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Family Sundays" featuring a carnival atmosphere. On Sundays, kids are permitted to play catch on the field prior to the game and run the bases afterwards as players sign autographs.

Another unique promotion will be "Al Appreciation Night" as the RiverDogs will randomly select from the telephone book a man named "Al," and "Al" will be the game's featured guest. "Al" will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, be interviewed on the radio and help with conducting on-field promotions, the public address announcer, among other things.

"Look, My Hot Dog Is Green" is another of the RiverDogs' new promotions as the hot dogs that are sold at the concession stands will be double-wrapped with anywhere from $2 to $100. Fans will be permitted to keep the money, along with the hot dog.

And while there are more special nights planned, "Mother-in-Law Night" will be a special opportunity for appreciative sons-in-laws. After the son-in-laws drop off his mother-in-law in a special "Drop-Off Zone," each son-in-law upon entering the park will be handed cotton balls for their ears. And in special RiverDogs' fashion, the son-in-law gets in free while the mother-in-law pays double.

The 2005 season begins April 7 when the RiverDogs host the Augusta Greenjackets, a first-year affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Season tickets and a variety of mini-plans are available now by contacting the RiverDogs Box Office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
