Reno Aces News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Doug Deeds belted a three-run homer after the Aces fell behind early, but Sacramento held on for a series-opening 5-3 win over Reno Monday night at Raley Field.
After the teams traded zeros through the first four innings, Sacramento broke the game open with a four-run fifth. The Aces would answer quickly, as Deeds hit his fifth homer of the year after Drew Macias led off the sixth with a walk and Ed Rogers followed with a single. But that was as close as Reno would get, as it stranded the based loaded in the eighth and went in order in the ninth.
Zach Kroenke tossed four scoreless innings in a spot start for Reno, allowing just one hit and striking out three. The River Cats plated all five runs against reliever Saul Rivera (0-1), who took the loss in his Aces debut, before Daniel Stange came on to strike out five in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Clay Mortensen (9-2) picked up his league-leading ninth win of the season, striking out nine in seven innings of work. Henry Rodriguez earned his ninth save of the season after holding the Aces at bay over the final 1.1 innings.
Deeds accounted for all three Aces runs, going 2-for-3 with a home run on the evening. Just three Aces recorded hits, with Ed Rogers and John Hester providing the rest of the offense for Reno.
Reno and Sacramento battle again Tuesday night, when Aces RHP Matt Torra (3-4, 4.31 ERA) will take the mound to face River Cats LHP Travis Blackley (1-1, 1.93 ERA), who spent the entire 2009 season with Reno. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT from Raley Field, and all the action can be heard live in Reno on Fox Sports Radio 1450 AM.
Reno returns home Tuesday, June 22, at 7:05 p.m. for a four-game homestand against Colorado Springs.
