Riptide Shut Out in Opener, 4-0

May 31, 2007 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, MA--The New England Riptide's road to a repeat began with a bust last night in Washington as they fell to the Washington Glory 4-0. In the matchup of last year's championship game pitchers the result was reversed as Glory pitcher Sarah Pauly allowed the Riptide just four hits in a complete game performance. Pauly had eigjht strikeouts on the night. Riptide pitcher Jocelyn Forest, on the other hand, gave up four runs on ten hits in 6.1 innings as she fell behind on hitters and struggled most of the night. Erica Beach, tomorrow night's starter, came in to get the last two batters in the sixth.

The top of the order did all the damage for the Glory as LaDonia Hughes began the third inning with a double. After Forest walked Kelly Kretschman, Nicole Barber put down a perfect bunt for a single to load the bases. Amber Jackson then singled to center driving in the first two Glory runs. Hughes started the trouble in the fifth also with a leadoff single. A single by Kretschman and another two out single by Jessica Moore scored the Glory's third run. Their fourth and final run came in the sixth on a leadoff homerun by Brooke Martinz.

The Riptide was never able to muster much offense. Lyndsey Angus was 2 for 3, Carri Martin 1 for 3 and Gina Carbonatto playing in her first NPF game also had a hit. The Riptide look to even the series tomorrow night in the second of a four game series. Erica Beach is expected to start for the Riptide against Desiree Serrano for the Glory. Both teams are playing with only two pitchers this weekend as Danielle Henderson is out with a strained back and is day to day. Riptide draft pick, pitcher Eileen Canney, is participating in the College World Series as are two of the Glory's pitchers.
