THE SKINNY
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees begin a three-game road trip at Missouri on Tuesday night. RGV is six points out of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference currently occupied by Corpus Christi. The Killer Bees have nine games left including tonight's contest; after this current road trip the Killer Bees play twice more on the road with both games at Corpus Christi (March 13, 16).
TONIGHT'S GAME
This is the first-ever game at Missouri for RGV.The Mavericks, a CHL expansion team, play their games in the city of Independence, right outside of Kansas City.This is the first meeting between the teams since November 6 (6-2 win) and 7 (4-3 OTW) in Hidalgo.RGV is winless in five games (0-3-2) while Missouri has won eight of its last 10 and four in a row...Missouri veteran Jeff Christian is fifth in CHL scoring while Carlyle Lewis is third in PIM; RGV's Sean Muncy (39, 3rd) and Missouri's Nick Sirota (41, 2nd) are neck-and-neck in the CHL rookie scoring race...Mavericks goalie Charlie Effinger, acquired via trade from Allen on Feb. 8, leads the league is GAA and is second is save percentage. Pointless facts; the Independence Event Center is about six miles from the Kaufmann (KC Royals) and Arrowhead Stadium (KC Chiefs) complex while the visiting team hotel actually overlooks the two major league venues.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
. COMING UP --- After tonight's game, RGV travels to Bossier-Shreveport (March 5, 6) before returning home on March 11 (Arizona, 10:30 a.m.) and March 12 (Laredo, 7:30 PM).
. SCRATCH MY BACK --- The Killer Bees have not won back-to-back games since December (20,26) and have won two in a row on the road just once (Dec. 18, 26). The team is also looking to string together consecutive home wins for the first time since winning three in a row in November (20, 21, 25).
. KID'S DAY GAME COMING --- RGV's annual Kid's Day Game is set for Thursday, March 11, vs. Arizona at 10:30 a.m. The Killer Bees are 4-2-0 at home in the annual game.
. ROSTER UPDATE --- Jesse Perrin missed Saturday's game with an undisclosed injury.Jesse Bennefield was placed on the 14-day IR on Feb. 14.Jesse Perrin missed the game on Feb. 20 with an undiscolsed injury.Zak McClellan missed five games on the IR (Feb. 6-18).Justin Kanigan is on the IR and has not played since Nov. 14.Jason Seerey is on CHL-granted leave.
. POWER PLAY --- RGV'S power play has one goal in eight of the last nine games and had its eight-game streak snapped last night.
. FRIGID FEBRUARY --- RGV finished February with a 3-7-3 record. 12 of 13 games in Feb. came against Southern Conference rivals. Of those 12, 10 were against both Corpus Christi (0-2-1) and Laredo (2-4-1). Two come against the Allen Americans (0-1-1) the other was the team's only game vs. Rapid City (1-0-0).
. CLOSE SHAVE --- Six of RGV's last eight games have been decided by one goal (2-2-2). The Killer Bees have been involved in 27 games decided by one goal this season and has a record of 12-6-9 in those contests. Goalie Andy Franck is 9-2-5 in those decisions while Wylie Rogers is 3-4-4.
. HOME AND ROAD HICCUPS --- RGV is 1-3-2 in its last five home games and has been outscored 25-17. The team is 2-5-2 in their last nine road games and has been outscored 42-18.
. FOUR'S STILL MORE --- RGV is 16-1-2 when scoring four or more goals this season. When scoring six or more, the Killer Bees are 6-0-0.
. WHEN FOUR IS LESS --- Out of Rio's 25 regulation losses, 21 have come when opponents score four or more goals. RGV is 3-21-2 when allowing four or more with all three of those wins coming away from Hidalgo.
