Arkansas RimRockers News Release
Little Rock, AR. In the ABA's first nationally televised game between two of the leagues top teams, the Arkansas RimRockers narrowly defeated the Nashville Rhythm 106-103 at the Allen Arena in Nashville. It was a great game and a true example of the ABA at its best - fast paced, quality players playing for pride and the love of the game.
In his first game of the season, Todd Day scored 19 points tying with the RimRockers' leading scorer, Kareem Reid. Shawnson Johnson followed with 18 as the RimRockers took a hard-fought victory from the 6-0 Rhythm. An absence of rebounding and an abundance of turnovers caused the RimRockers to trail the majority of the first quarter. The RimRockers shot only 49 percent from the field allowing the Rhythm to maintain a comfortable 10-point lead throughout the first half. Before the end of the half, Day hit a crucial 3-pointer to make the score 47-40.
The RimRockers forced turnovers late in the first half and continued to play pressure defense and converted the few open shots they were allowed, but it wasn't enough to tkae the lead. they went into half-time trailing 57-50. The RimRockers came back from half-time with a new game plan. They ran their plays and followed through on their shots. Scotty Thurman hit a pair of free throws which brought the RimRockers within two points of the Rhythm. Marco Cole followed up with an easy lay-up to tie the game 65-65. In the third quarter, Jason Harrison was fouled in a 3-D possession and hit all three free throws. The third made free throw put the RimRockers over the 100 point market and in the lead for the first time during the game. Scotty Thurman, who was 50% on field goals for the night, hit an easy jumper with 9.8 seconds left in the game to seal the victory.
