Rickey Foggie named SFC Assistant Coach of the Year
Published on August 18, 2006 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Macon Knights Offensive Coordinator RICKEY FOGGIE has been named the SFC Assistant Coach of the Year, as selected by a vote of af2 head coaches and beat writers. This is the second straight year Foggie has received this honor. He was the af2's first-ever recipient in 2005 as an assistant coach for the Amarillo Dusters.
Foggie, in his second season as an af2 assistant after a successful AFL and CFL playing career, helped turn the Knights around in the second half of the 2006 season. Before Foggie came to Macon, the Knights offense averaged just 35.7 points per game over their first seven games and needed a boost. The team earned victories in just two of those seven contests. When Foggie became available, Macon Head Coach Derek Stingley, a former standout defensive back in the AFL, was ready to hand the offensive reigns over to the former quarterback. With Foggie in charge of the offense for the latter half of the season, the Knights showed amazing improvement. Macon averaged 50.7 points per game over the team's final nine games, winning six.
Aside from his play-calling abilities, Foggie also helped Macon from a player personnel perspective, urging Stingley to acquire key playmakers like OS Chavis McCollister and WR/DB D.J. Humphries. Thanks to these new faces on offense, the Knights were making their way toward a playoff berth before losing a tough road game at Arkansas in the final week of the season. The club just missed the postseason, finishing 8-8. McCollister was arguably the best receiver in the league in the latter half of 2006, catching 62 passes, 22 for touchdowns, in seven games. He also accumulated 907 yards receiving, an impressive average of 129.6 yards per game.
Prior to his coaching career, Foggie played 10 seasons in the Canadian Football League and nine in the Arena Football League. He threw for 18,636 yards, 332 touchdowns with 82 interceptions, while running for 19 touchdowns over his AFL career. He totaled 14,009 yards and 91 touchdowns while playing in the CFL, appearing in three Grey Cup Championships. He also rushed for 2,536 yards. While in college, Foggie played four seasons for Lou Holtz at Minnesota and was named team MVP each year. He currently ranks 2nd all-time in total yardage and is a member of the Golden Gophers Hall of Fame.
