Rick Adduono Named Generals Head Coach
July 10, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greensboro Generals News Release
Greensboro, NC â The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) announced Rick Adduono (ah-DOO-no) as their new head coach this afternoon at a press conference held at Jack Astor's Bar and Grill. Adduono comes to the Generals from the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, where he spent the last four seasons as their head coach. He was also the Stingrays general manager last year. As per club policy, terms of Adduono's contract were not disclosed.
Adduono, 47, brings to the Generals a tremendous track record of winning hockey. Adduono posted a 156-94-34 record with the Stingrays during his four-year stint as head coach for an overall .609 winning percentage. Adduono directed the club to the Kelly Cup Championship in 2001, with his team posting a 14-4 playoff record that season. Prior to becoming head coach, Adduono was the Stingrays assistant coach for two seasons, winning another Kelly Cup in 1997. Adduono's South Carolina teams have never had fewer than 35 wins or 80 points and have advanced to the playoffs every season. However, after six years and two championships with the Stingrays, Adduono now faces a new challenge in Greensboro.
"I really can't tell you how good I feel right now. It's just a tremendous feeling to be here," says Adduono. "No one wants to win more than I do, and we're going to find a way to make it happen in Greensboro. We'll put a good team on the ice because we're going to work 24 hours a day at winning the Kelly Cup championship."
Prior to joining the Stingrays, Adduono was the head coach of the Thunder Bay Flyers of the United States Hockey League, where he led them to four championships in five years. Adduono also played seven seasons of professional hockey, including a 98-point campaign (38g, 60a) in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans, which tied him for the league lead in points in the 1977-78 season.
"To me, he is the epitome of what we're looking for to restore hockey and a winning tradition back here in Greensboro," says Generals co-owner and president Rocco Scarfone (skar-FOAN). "I have talked to Rick multiple times about the direction we want to take the team and what the final result needs to be, and that is to win. I feel confident that will be done this season."
Adduono becomes the fourth Generals coach since re-entering the league in 1999, taking over for Alex Godynyuk, who served as interim head coach for the final six weeks of last season.
