July 6, 2013 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Dayton Dutch Lions News Release

DAYTON, OH ... On a cool night at Miami Valley Hospital Stadium in Beavercreek Ohio the Dayton Dutch Lions (7-3-5) gave up three points to the Richmond Kickers (9-0-6). Goals scored by Dayton's Brandon Swartzendruber and Gregory Preciado were not enough to hold off Richmond.

The 4th minute a steal off a Richmond defender by Gibson Bardsley was passed forward to Brandon Swartzendruber for a beautiful goal to the far post. Eli Garner, Bardsley and Irakli Khutsidze each had opportunities in the first half, but were unable to convert for a second goal.

The first twenty minutes saw Richmond surprised by Dayton's constant pressure. Richmond's Jason Yeisley had multiple shots and runs, but Dayton's defense and keeper Matt Williams held Richmond at bay. The half ends with the score Dayton Dutch Lions 1, Richmond Kickers 0.

The second half Richmond came out with higher pressure causing Dayton to send more balls forward in the air. Possession begins to go back and forth at a fast and furious pace.

A foul in the box in the 56th minute by Dayton's Gregory Preciado, lead to a penalty kick that was put in by Richmond's Luke Vercollone. A throw-in opportunity near Dayton's goal in the 59th minute sets up another score for Vercollone. Dayton's keeper Williams is caught off guard in the 71st minute when a ball that was shot in by Seaton, deflects off a Dayton player, and goes in the net.

But Dayton is not finished, the 87th minute Preciado puts the ball in off a corner by Garner. Dayton finds new life and the Lions pull back within one.

In stoppage time Dayton pressed eleven men forward and a header by Preciado missed by inches. The game ends Richmond 3, Dayton 2.

Coach Patrick Bal had this to say about the game. "I just told the guys, I forgot how it felt to lose, it's not fun, but I applaud the effort. We almost came back from 3-1 down, we didn't lose because the other team was better, we lost because we gave up a couple of goals. We made a couple of mistakes. We should have put it away in the first half, we had a couple of chances. So, we lost because of us, not because of the other team. I told the guys we have to keep our heads up, it's one game, not the whole season. We will go for three points in Columbus on Wednesday."

Dayton travels to Columbus to meet the Crew Reserve team (2-4-1) at the Crew Stadium on Wednesday, July 10th at 7:30pm. They return home to Miami Valley Hospital Stadium in Beavercreek, Ohio to take on Orlando City (10-2-4) on Sunday, July 14th at 6:30pm.
