Rochester Rhinos News Release
The Rochester Rhinos tied the fourth place Charlotte Eagles 2:2 at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, New York on Saturday, July 6 to keep their home unbeaten streak alive at seven games. The Rhinos were down 2:0 with only six minutes left in the match, but two consecutive goals turned the game around to give the Rhinos the tie.
Charlotte midfielders Jorge Herrera and Paul Islas had goals for the Eagles, and forwards Andrew Hoxie and Tam McManus each scored one a piece for the Rhinos. Hoxie's goal was his first of the season.
In the 33rd minute Islas made it a 1:0 match in favor of the Eagles with an assist from forward Christian Meza. Meza served a cross from the right flank to Islas on the back post. Islas received the ball just inside the Rochester six yard box, and he put the ball in the goal just to the right of Rhinos goalkeeper Kristian Nicht.
Charlotte advanced its lead to 2:0 in the 74th minute after a goal from Herrera, off an assist from midfielder Drew Yates. Yates crossed the ball from the right side of the field to Herrera at the top left corner of the Rhinos penalty box. Herrera settled Yates service with a touch and then shot the ball into the right side of the goal just past a diving Nicht.
Forward Andrew Hoxie cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 in the 84th minute with his first goal of the season. Hoxie fought off three Charlotte defenders in front of the goal after a Rhinos thrown in, turned the ball around just inside the box and wired the ball past Reed with his right foot.
Rhinos forward Tam McManus scored the equalizer in extra time off an assist from Hoxie. JC Banks took a long throw-in from the right touchline, and Hoxie headed the ball towards the left side of the goal. Hoxie's flick of the ball found forward Tam McManus's right foot just outside the left post for the goal.
One point leaves the Rochester Rhinos in 11th place in the USL PRO table. They trail the eighth place VSI Tampa Bay by eight points with eight matches left to play. The Rhinos have never missed the playoffs in their 18-year history.
