RHP Rob Roth of McAllen Thunder Acquired by Atlanta Braves
July 6, 2011 - North American League (NAmL) News Release
(San Ramon, CA. July 7, 2011) The North American Baseball League, one of the premier professional independent leagues on the continent, announced today that the contract of right handed pitcher Robert Roth has been purchased by the Atlanta Braves. Roth has signed a three-year contract and will join the Braves' Single A affiliate, the Rome Braves of the South Atlantic League. He is the first player signed out of the new McAllen Thunder, which plays in the Southern Division of the NAL.
Roth, a native of Lewiston, Idaho, is set to make his second appearance in affiliated baseball after being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 19th Round of the 2006 MLB amateur entry draft as a 17 year old. Roth appeared in 15 games for the Thunder this season, compiling a 1-1 record with one save and an ERA of 3.48. He struck out 42 batters in 20.1 innings while only walking 5.
"Mr. Roth has joined one of the best organizations in baseball and he should do very well," commented Thunder Manager Matt Stark. "It is a big loss for us but it's a good thing. First and foremost for the young kid and secondly for the league," Stark continued. "He deserves it and we will cheer him on and we wish him the best."
Prior to joining the Thunder, Roth spent two seasons in the Phillies system, playing a combined 41 games between the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn State League (A-), the Lakewood BlueClaws of the South Atlantic League (A), and the Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League (A+). While in the Philadelphia organization, he had a record of 11-6 with 57 strikeouts. Roth also played for several independent teams in 2010, including the Laredo Broncos and the Windy City ThunderBolts.
