June 27, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rochester Rhinos News Release
The Rochester Rhinos host the Charlotte Eagles in Sahlen's Stadium in a USL PRO Regular Season match on Saturday, June 28th 2014 at 7:05PM The Rhinos are currently fifth in the USL PRO table with 24 points from 16 matches while the Charlotte Eagles are 11th with 13 points from 13 matches. The Eagles trail eighth place Charleston Battery by three points for the final playoff spot in the USL PRO table with a game in hand.
The Rochester Rhinos will be playing their seventh match in 17 days when they take the field on Saturday night in Sahlen's Stadium against the Eagles. Rochester's congested stretch of fixtures consisted of road matches in Los Angeles, Arizona, and Oklahoma City. In between five league matches, the Rhinos upset D.C. United 1:0 in the Fourth Round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup before bowing out to their MLS affiliate New England Revs 2:1 on Wednesday night in the Fifth Round. Rochester's crowded fixture list in June will be counter balanced by only four matches in July.
"There's no question that we've played a lot of matches." Rhinos head coach Bob Lilley said. "We've rotated the squad as best we could, gotten contributions from most of our roster over the past two and a half weeks, and gotten some results. Our schedule settles down in the month of July, but we do not want to look past our match on Saturday night. Every point we can pick up in league play will be valuable."
The Rhinos have gotten scoring power from different sources in league play and the U.S. Open Cup. Rhinos 2012 Most Valuable Player JC Banks leads Rochester in scoring. He has five goals and two assists for 12 points. He is currently ninth in the league in goals scored and 10th in USL PRO in points. Rochester striker Colin Rolfe has not scored a goal in league play. However, he had three goals in four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches including the game winning goal in the Rhinos 1:0 upset of D.C. United. Rolfe already ranks fourth in all-time U.S. Open Cup goals in club history.
The Eagles have historically been a difficult opponent for the Rochester Rhinos. Rochester trails the all-time series with Charlotte 3 - 4 - 3. The Rhinos are only 2 - 2 - 1 against the Eagles in Rochester, and even USL Hall of Fame Coach Bob Lilley has a 0 - 1 - 1 record against Charlotte in his tenure as the coach of the Rhinos. Charlotte owned the early fixtures in this series with a 4 - 1 - 1 record against the Rhinos in their first six matches. However, Rochester has a 2 - 1 - 3 record against Charlotte in the USL PRO era, and is unbeaten against the Eagles in their last four matches.
Charlotte will also enter the match with some of USL PRO's top scorers. Eagles star Jorge Herrera has five goals and three assists for 13 points. He is sixth in the league in goals scored and eighth in USL PRO in points. Midfielder Drew Yates has three goals and five assists for 11 points. He is second in USL PRO in assists and 11th in the league in points.
