Lions, Galaxy II Set for Showdown
June 27, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The first meeting between Orlando City SC and the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex highlights an exciting weekend of action in USL PRO that sees a number of key matchups throughout the country.
Orlando has opened the season on a club-record 15-game undefeated streak, and is hopeful of a chance to break the Richmond Kickers' USL PRO record of 22 games undefeated. The Lions have also won their past six league outings, with 2012 MVP Kevin Molino's 10 goals leading the way.
The Galaxy II battled the Lions for first place through much of the season but have hit a rough patch of form of late after going winless in their past three games. That spell saw them fall to both the Rochester Rhinos and Charleston Battery and drop to third in the standings. Los Dos will be eager to get back on a winning track and close the gap on the Lions in their pursuit of the regular-season championship.
The weekend's action gets underway on Friday night with one of the historic rivalries in USL history as the Battery host the Kickers at Blackbaud Stadium. Friday's game will be the 50th meeting between the two sides, who have remarkably both earned 22 victories in the all-time series that began in 1993. Both have much to play for, too, with the Kickers in pursuit of Orlando at the top of the USL PRO standings and Charleston needing points to maintain its hold on the eighth and final playoff berth.
Saturday night also brings a big clash between OKC Energy FC and Sacramento Republic FC at Pribil Stadium, as the Energy bring a five-game undefeated streak into the contest. OKC has grown in consistency throughout its inaugural season and took a 2-0 victory against Sacramento when the two teams last met. Republic FC has rebounded with back-to-back victories since, however, and will now take aim at a top-three position as it starts its second half of the season.
