Rochester Rhinos News Release
Rochester, NY - The Rochester Rhinos finish their three matches in six days stretch this Friday, June 19 facing the host Harrisburg City Islanders at the Skyline Sports Complex in a United Soccer League (USL) match. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 pm. The Rhinos are currently top of the table overall in the 24-team USL with an 8-0-4 record, good for 28 points and first in the Eastern Conference, and have allowed a league-low four goals. The City Islanders are seventh in the East with a 4-3-3 record for 15 points, but are unbeaten at home in the USL (2-0-1).
The Rhinos top ranked defense is led by 4th year keeper Brandon Miller, who leads the USL with a 0.35 goals against average and five and a half shutouts in eight and one half matches played. Offensively, the Rhinos are paced by Christian Volesky with four goals and one assist, Steevan Dos Santos with four goals (all in his last 5 USL matches) and Alex Dixon with 3 goals. Harrisburg's leading scorer is Ken Tribbett with three goals, Jason Plumhoff with two goals and two assists and Jose Barril with two goals and one assist.
This is first league match between the Rhinos and City Islanders this season, but the teams have already met in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on May 27 in Harrisburg, a match won by Rochester 3-1 in extra time, with all of the goals coming in the final 15 minutes. Eric Bird put Harrisburg up 1-0 in the 106th minute, but Kenardo Forbes equalized a minute later off a pass from Asani Samuels, who then scored twice himself in the 115th and 120th minutes for the final margin of victory. The Rhinos played the final 82 minutes with 10 men after dos Santos was sent off for a second yellow card in the 38th minute.
In their last USL match on June 13, the Rhinos beat Louisville City 2-0 at Sahlen's Stadium paced by a shutout from Miller and goals from Forbes (43') and Dos Santos (68'), Forbes earning USL Team of the Week honors for the winning goal. The Rhinos most recent match was a fourth round US Open Cup encounter with Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (Harrisburg's MLS affiliate) this past Tuesday that officially ended in a 0-0 tie after extra time, after which Union won in the shootout 3-1 to advance in the Cup. Harrisburg's last USL match was against host St. Louis FC and the result was a 1-1 tie with Eric Ayuk's 38th minute goal cancelled by Sam Fink's equalizer in the 68th minute. Note: Ayuk played for Union against the Rhinos on Tuesday in the US Open Cup.
The next Rhinos match is Saturday, June 27th against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Sahlen's Stadium on Hall of Fame Night starting at 7:05 pm. The Rhinos will induct executive Chris Economides, all time postseason scoring leader Darren Tilley and four time champion defender Mali Walton into the Rhinos Hall of Fame Class of 2015.
