Rhinos Host Charleston on July 26 Looking to Extend Record Unbeaten Streak
July 24, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rochester Rhinos News Release
Rochester, NY - The Rochester Rhinos play the second of two straight matches at Sahlen's Stadium on Sunday, July 26th, facing the Charleston Battery in a United Soccer League (USL) match. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 pm.
Rochester and Charleston are currently 1-2 atop the USL Eastern Conference. The first place Rhinos are riding a club record 18 match unbeaten streak (11-0-7, 40 points) and are just 4 matches away from tying the USL record of 22 consecutive matches without a loss to start a season, a mark held by the 2013 Richmond Kickers. The Battery are six points behind the Rhinos with a 9-3-7 record and 34 points.
The Rhinos' defense has allowed only six goals in USL league matches and are on pace to break the 1998 Rhinos' team record for fewest goals given up in a season at 15. The back line is led by fourth year keeper Brandon Miller, who leads the USL with a 0.24 goals against average and nine shutouts in twelve full matches played. Offensively, the Rhinos are paced by Christian Volesky with six goals and one assist, Steevan Dos Santos with five goals and Alex Dixon and Jonny Mendoza with three goals apiece. Charleston's offense stands fifth in the USL and are led by Dane Kelly with nine goals (tied for fourth in the USL) and two assists, Ricky Garbanzo with four goals and two assists and Maikel Chang with one goal and six assists (tied for third in the USL). The Battery also have the third best defense in the USL, with Cuban keeper Odisnel Cooper being unbeaten in 2015 (7-0-4).
This is second of two USL matches between the Rhinos and Battery in 2015, the first being a 0-0 tie on July 3 at Blackbaud Stadium. Rochester has played Charleston more times than any other current USL team; a total of 44 matches overall, a 15-9-9 mark in the regular season, 5-2-3 in the playoffs and a loss in the 2004 US Open Cup.
In their last USL match on July 18 at Sahlen's Stadium, the Rhinos played to a scoreless tie against the Charlotte Independence, the first points dropped by Rochester at home this season. The Battery played in Canada against Toronto FC II on Friday night and lost 1-0 on a late Skylar Thomas' goal, Charleston's first loss in five matches. The Battery had only 16 available players due to travel restrictions to Canada for the four Cuban natives on the squad (Cooper, Chang, Heviel Cordoves and Navion Boyd).
The next Rhinos home match is Sunday, August 9 at 5:05 pm against the Richmond Kickers. Tickets for all Rhinos home matches, including flex packages and group sales tickets, are also currently on sale and can be purchased by calling (585) 454-KICK (5425), online via Ticketmaster, by visiting the MVP Health Care Box Office at Sahlen's Stadium during business hours or by visiting rhinossoccer.com.
